So, my dad said, "let's go to vegas!"

So here I am.

You may notice that my time stamp says 1:23 AM. Don't adjust your clocks, folks, that's what time it is. Just finally got settled down into the room after eating dinner ($45 for three - burgers and a salad). Didn't actually get to our room until midnight, and that's after leaving at like 5 pm.

Horrible, horrible traffic. Spent almost two hours at speeds averaging around five miles per hour. Never did even find out what the heck caused the problems anyway; there was no traffic accident or anything. When we finally got to the hotel after driving around lost in the city for some time, we decided we were all hungry so looked for food. There's a California Pizza Kitchen inside the hotel, calling the front desk or whatever revealed that they were open until 1 am.

Well, they weren't. After treking through the whole casino and everything, the guy said they're only open that late on friday and saturday. Gee, thanks front desk. Went to a crappy restraunt after that, one of the few things still open at 12:30 or whatever. A fries and burgers type place. That happened to charge like $5 for a (SMALL) order of fries and like $12+ for anything else. Did I mention they were also as slow as ice melting in the 30 degree temperatures outside?

Ugh.

Well, 2008 has nearly drawn to a close. I just finished my last day of instruction in school, and only the finals are left. It's kind of sad, how the weeks and months just passed me by and here I am at the end of the road. I've still got the finals ahead of me, and I hate how their pressure and weight are bearing down on me. I hate how school works, how they essentially judge you based on just one single test, and if you fail it, you have wasted your time that entire semester and shouldn't have even taken the class. And furthermore, it will be recorded permanently... Of course, it's not really permanent, because eventually it'll all go away... It makes me wonder if we're all wasting our time at school, and should be off doing other things, better things with our time that we have and... oh, I'm rambling.

I just got back from San Diego. Went there yesterday and stayed in a hotel. I'd actually stayed in that same hotel a long, long time ago and they'd really renovated that place and made it a lot better. Anyway, early this morning, I had quite an usual experience... I went to a gay wedding.

You might hear a lot on the news about California and their gay weddings and stuff thanks to some judge in San Fransisco basically changing the law by his ruling or something, and now they've got Proposition 8 to really make sure it sticks that there's no gay marriages. That's the big picture, but in the little picture there's just every-day people going about their lives and getting married, and my cousin happened to be one.

The two sides of my family are interesting. On my dad's side they are very southern, very conservative, very religious, etc. On my mom's side it's kind of the opposite. They're kind of all over the place. One of my cousins on that side was a single mom for years, another married a japanese woman, another cousin is going out with a black woman, and now one of my male cousins got married to a hispanic man...

I wonder how my dad's parents will react. We haven't really told any of that side of the family about this latest happening. I'm not sure if they'd approve. And regardless of that, would they have wanted to be told about it? To be invited? I don't know.

Anyway, went to the wedding today. On the way, went to Cocos for breakfast, but it was full and had like a 20 minute wait. So got a muffin at the nearby grocery store instead. Then it was off to the wedding. The food kind of sucked but whatever... There was some kind of cheesy hawaiian theme to stuff or something and quite frankly I found it laughable.

I didn't know what to expect going to a gay wedding. I was like, who is the bride? I was half expecting one of them to come in wearing a wedding dress, but that never happened. Weddings are pretty boring kind of, so I did some card tricks for some people to keep myself entertained. They seemed to go off pretty well, but I always wonder how much of that is someone's honest opinion or if they are just humoring me. Obviously, I know all of the flaws of my magic tricks so I don't think they're very good... Anyway...

After that, on the way home, I realized that Barona, a casino I'd seen advertisements before, was along the way back home kind of. I went to Vegas back when I was 20, and was kind of miffed that I couldn't do anything in the casino. And when I turned 21, basically nothing happened and I haven't been gambling or anything. So off it was, through dismal Indian reservation land to the casino! You know, the US really hasn't treated the Indians well at all. Some of them they gave diseases to, some of them they killed, and most of them they just rounded them up, kicked them out of their homes, then sent them to some really crappy places out in the middle of nowhere... Kind of like this Barona reservation.

Anyway, went in, spent $60 on hold-em and lost. Guy went all in one hand, and I had Ace-King. I raised, and the guy went all in, and I stupidly folded. Later on, I felt like 'ok, I can make my money back' when I got a pair of pocket Kings. So I decided to go all in, and some guy called me with Ace-Queen. I was like "Ok, my hand still roxxors..." Then the flop came up and it's like Axx and I lose. So that was the end of my hold-em experience.

Then I spent like $40 on blackjack. Went up, went down, went up, went down. After a while, I was back with $40 and left the table. I wanted to go back to the poker tables and play some limit hold em, but all the tables were full full full and there was even a waiting line so I said screw it, I'm going home!

A few hours on the road later, here I am...

So that was my day basically...

It is an absolute train wreck of a disaster. This movie is probably one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It takes all ideas of sense, reason, and, I dunno, good film and flushes it down the toilet. Then it rips the toilet out of the wall, and throws it away at a garbage dump. Then it blows the dump up with high yield explosions and invites its friends to dance strange, tribal dances around the gigantic bonfire.

Does my analogy make any sense at all? Not at all. But then again, neither does this sad excuse for a movie, so I feel it is fitting.

I could give an actual review of the movie, and explain in detail each flaw it has, from the very beginning to the very end, and there's quite a number of them (starting with the movie being made at all, and me watching it), but I won't, because I don't feel like it. Instead, I'll let the good doctor say everything that needs to be said with just one picture.

I've got two speeches/presentations I have to give tomorrow, in two different classes. One of them is for my speech class, and the other is for my japanese class. If I do poorly on the first, I will fail the class. If I do poorly on the second, I may fail the class. I just started working on them today, because I kept putting it off, and putting it off... Now I am regretting this. I'm almost done with writing out my speech for my speech class, then I need to condense it and put it on index cards. Then maybe I can start working on my japanese presentation, which I will have to give in japanese... This is all very lovely...

Always Waiting For Third Street

So I saw a movie today. First time I'd gone to the local movie theater over at the Woodbridge Center. It was kind of small and I'm not sure how old the theater was, but it was really crowded.

The reason it was crowded was because they were having some kind of Japanese Film Festival type thing this weekend. Some of the movies they were showing include Akanezora, Hula Girls and One Piece. Don't ask me.

In my case, I went there to see a movie called Always Sanchome no Yuhi, or Always Sunset on Third Street as the translated title is called. I ran into some of the people I know from school there and chatted for a little while before the movie finally started.

It's a pretty good movie, and stars quite a few recognizeable people. Horikita Maki, Koyuki, Tsutsumi Shinichi... I'm not sure who the guy who played the writer was; he wasn't recognizeable to me at all, although someone said he was somewhat famous.

Anyway, so I said the movie was pretty good, right? That is, I _think_ it was good. Actually, about somewhere in the middle near towards the end, the movie abruptly changed scenes and then everything was upside and in reverse. It was that way for a little while before finally the movie stopped. Then, someone came up and announced that they would fix it in like, 10-15 minutes.

Well... So we all waited... And waited... And waited... And like, twenty or thirty minutes later, someone else came by and announced they would fix it, in like, 10-15 minutes... So we all waited.... And waited... And... I said screw it. I've got a headache. I'm going home.

So that's the story of my movie madness.

Winter 2008 jdrama update

Well, it's a little bit more than halfway through the winter 2008 jdrama season, and I've watched several of the shows and I've formulated several opinions on all of them. I'll summarize my opinions here, and I'll go down the list alphabetically.

Bara no nai Hanaya - Haven't seen it, and I'm not sure why I haven't yet. It seems to be fairly popular, so many I should see it.

Hachimitsu to Kuroba - Two words: Why?! Okay, that's just one. Anyway, the show I was most looking forward to turns out to be rather lame. Ikuta Toma is excellent at portraying Takemoto and that's about the only good thing about this show. I understand that they don't want to follow the plot of anime/manga, but this show doesn't even attempt to follow the spirit of it. It's like some TV producer guy watched 5 seconds of H&C and said "hahahaha, they're doing stupid/crazy stuff, let's make a TV show based on that!" because that's all we're getting here. Yes, H&C was freaking hilarious because of all the silly things they did. No, that was hardly the entire point. H&C was really moving and made you think about human relationships and stuff. This show is just... ugh.

Ashita no Kita Yoshio - Is this show melodrama or is this show comedy? I'm not sure and the writers aren't sure either. All I know is that it's very, very strange. It's getting really poor ratings and that's unfortunate, because this is really an interesting show. It's about a guy who plans to commit suicide in 11 days, and the people who he meets and interacts with. Half the time it's really depressing, half the time it's very funny, and half the time it's very WTF? (yes, I realize that's three halves). I thought it was really good for the first few episodes, but midway it's kind of dragging with too much emphasis on the foot-massage girl. Oh well, it's a pretty interesting show. I'm not sure who I'd recommend it to, though.

Edit: Binbou Danshi - I completely forgot about this one and need to track it down to see if it's any good!

Koshonin - Yonekura Ryoko plays the first female something or other in some police branch. Everyone is all hateful and discriminating towards her. She acts really cold hearted and has some kind of history with some crazy murderer type guy. The cheese and WTF factor in this show are very high. (For example, the entire first episode is about a guy holding his ex-wife hostage with a toy gun. They try to make it all serious and dramatic, and they've got like 200 police cars and rooftop snipers and crap surrounding the guy, and he repeatedly pops his head up to yell at them, but they don't do anything to him until _after_ our heroine solves the problem, when they all rush in and kill the guy just to show how dastardly the establishment is or something). This show is certainly not Odoru Daisousasen, and I'm not very interested in it.

Shikaotoko Aoniyoshi - Tamaki Hiroshi needs to gain weight. I don't know what happened since Nodame Cantabile, but he has turned into a skeleton in comparison. That said, this is an extremely odd show. It's about 'the world's unluckiest guy' who moves to Nara after being dumped by his fiancee and being transferred from his job as a chemist to... an all girl's highschool teacher? The high school girl harem factor could be very high, but it's not at all. In fact, despite being a show about a teacher, we barely see his students. Nara is basically the sticks, but an important place in japan's history. This is important to the plot because a talking deer tasks our hero with finding an ancient artifact to stop a giant fish from awakening and destroying japan. He's rather reluctant to do this, however, until the deer turns our hero into a deer, too! Yes, I realize how ridiculous this sounds, but the show is somewhat interesting regardless.

Edison no Haha - Ito Masaki in this, so it was guaranteed that I'd at least take a look. This show is about a preschool teacher and a kid who very well may be a genius. I've only watched one episode so far, but it seemed pretty funny. The little kid is great. Somehow managed to avoid being bratty while still being a problem-causing menace.

Mirai Koshi Meguru - This show is written by Kudo Kankuro. If you don't know who that is, he's the writer of Ikebukuro West Gate Park and Kisarazu Cat's Eye, among other things. If you don't know what either of those shows are, shame on you! Kisarazu Cat's Eye may very well be the funniest thing I have ever watched. Every episode was nothing but nonstop laughter, and considering that it's about a guy who dies from cancer, that's quite a feat. Anyway, Mirai Koshi Meguru starts Fukuda Kyoko, a cramschool teacher who finds herself able to see people's future on her 24th birthday. This leads to some humorous results. She's quite surprised when she finds out her boyfriend becomes a rotund man, for example, and apparently her boss' hair doesn't change at all in 20 years because he wears a wig. The episodes are all fairly episodic, with our heroine trying to solve the problem of one of her students or the people around her, but they're still pretty funny. Some of them are quite weird. In the first episode, for example, the kid whose future she is trying to change becomes how she saw it because he happened to meet some black guy singing in the bathroom when she made him come to the cram school one day after he was trying to drop out. Anyway, I'm watching this one and I recommend it.

1 Pound no Fukuin - I've never read the manga or anything, but I knew as of last year, when I heard that they were making a jdrama of this, that it would be good. Based on a Rumiko Takashi manga, how could they go wrong with this show? You know what? I was right. 1 Pound no Fukuin is freaking hilarious. They seem to have really deemphasized the boxing matches since the first few episodes, and that's probably a good thing. Despite being about a boxer, the relationship with the nun and the various hijinks with the various characters around him are much more interesting. Plus, honestly, Kamenashi Kazuya as a boxer with weight problems isn't convincing at all. I'm not sure if he's boxing very well or not, but they make such a big deal about him gaining to much weight for his weight class or whatever, and then when he had a boxing match, his opponents always looked like way bigger, muscular, or just simply larger, etc. compared to him. Anyway, this show is pretty good so far.

That's it! If you've got any opinions on these jdramas (or just opinions about my opinions), feel free to comment :)

    <lj:music>KAT-TUN - Keep The Faith</lj:music>

Saw the first episode of the new live action Honey and Clover. All I can say is wow, they really aren't following the plot of the original at all. I understand that that might be the case with all of the recent TV series adaptions of manga and stuff recently. And to be honest, why not?

Honey and Clover is my favorite anime, but I don't care if make everything exactly the same. I mean, why do the same thing over again? People have already read the manga, watched the anime, tried to forget about the movie. Instead they're taking the same basic ideas and characters and being very liberal with their usage. It's kind of interesting, and I really want to see what they do with it.

I only watched the japanese raws, so I still need to watch the english subs, which are already on the net as I type. What am I waiting for? Dunno.

Anyway, this is officially my favorite jdrama of the new season, even though it's the only one I've seen so far :P Last season was pretty disappointing actually; not just because of the jdramas, but because of the lack of decent/active subbers for any of it. I watched Mop Girl raws up to episode 6 or 7, and would've liked to see more of SP, but I was watching the raws on veoh, and veoh sucks...

There's actually a ton of jdramas from last season I want to watch but no one seems to care about. I'm surprised how poorly Utahime did, ratings-wise. I haven't watched it, but was it really that bad? Or has Nagase become that unpopular?

More about Fall 2007. I watched the first episode of Abarenbo Mama, and that was so bad. Joshi Deka! also seemed pretty lame, but I only watched the first episode of that. I'd watch more of it if I could, though. Just for Nakama Yukie. Speaking of which, who else besides me is excited for Gokusen 3? :P

Dream Again was very mediocre. I feel sorry for a lot of the cast members, especially Sorimachi. The writing was just so goddawful. It was just like they needed a TV show to fill the slot and came up with just enough to fill it; they obviously didn't have any specific plot or anything in mind when writing it.

Let's talk Iryu 2. Iryu was one of my favorite jdramas of 2006. How did its sequel, Iryu 2, compare? Well, to begin with, the first episode was long. Very, very long. And quite frankly, ridiculous. They had the whole team spread thin doing like 4 or 5 surgeries, all at the same time, in different hospitals, and problems just kept piling up and somehow they manage to get away without any problem at all. The rest of the season seemed equally silly; almost like a parody of Iryu, where they did everything that Iryu did in the first season in a new hospital and new cast members, but I don't know, I just didn't think it was nearly as good as Iryu.

How about Yukan Club? No offense to my friends at Nya!, but it wasn't the best show I've ever seen. At the beginning, I really liked it. It had just the right amount of humor and action and stuff! And who can ever forget Oyaji Love? But as time wore on, it just got sillier and sillier and the humor less and less. Somewhere around the infamous laxative episode, I was kind of bored with the series. Still, it wasn't bad, and it was a fair bit better than Tantei Gakuen Q, the summer drama in the same time slot. Also, I will say this, I think Keep the Faith is KATTUN's catchiest song yet.

In semi-related news to Yukan Club, WTF? Kashii Yu is marrying Odagiri Joe? I usually don't care about this sort of thing, but seriously, WTF? She's the same age as me, and he's like, so much older. Also, mai waifu~~ nooo! But, as a Kamen Rider fan, I'll have to acknowledge it and wish OdaJoe's happiness! Even if he's trying to look like Moses now.

Last but not least, Galileo. Galileo officially rocks your socks off. It peters off somewhere near the middle, but it's still an awesome show. If you haven't seen Galileo yet, shame on you! Go watch it now! Seriously, start downloading it right now.

Of the 2007 fall jdramas, I also want to see Hataraki Man and Swan no Baka.

Anyway, that's all I've got to talk about for now. This new jdrama season doesn't seem nearly as interesting as the last one. As it is, I'm just looking forward to seeing Hachimitsu to Kuroba, Binbo Danshi, and 1 Pound no Fukuin. The latter two will probably be dumb/goofy/lame, though I'll still watch them. I also want to see the Nodame specials! They've already aired and I haven't seen them! Argh!! Anyway, if any of the other shows of the new season turn out to be decent as well, then that's just great.

Christmasy Stuff

You know, I _do_ do more with this livejournal than just talk about problems I've had at school, you know! There's all kinds of other things I could and will write about . Christmas, for example.

Had that whole family get-together for Christmas thing happen. Okay, I'm done talking about it.

No, uh, seriously. My brother is visiting from the 51st state of Canada for the week, and he's here staying in our apartment, in the livingroom. He said that it wasn't what he was expecting and I told him it wasn't what anyone was expecting.

Anyway, today we drove through a ton of traffic on the freeway over to my aunt/uncle/cousins' house. I actually haven't seen that whole bunch together in several long years; everytime we'd visit, or something else in the family would come up, one or two of my three cousins was always missing.

A bunch of other people in the family were there too, of course, and they all chatted and discussed and all that sort of thing over the loud TV and the game of football :P I was in the other room most of the time, on my laptop. Yeah, I'm real sociable.

Also spent awhile in my cousin's room, talking with him and my other cousin about useless crap. None of them actually live there anymore, though. Even my littlest cousin is all growd up now and has gone to college. They grow up so fast, sniff sniff.

Also had some strange food, and there was no room for me on any of the tables, so when I ate it again had to be away from everyone else. It's no wonder I gravitate away from the crowd; they don't want me. :P

Anyway, I guess I can't really write much about it because nothing really happened. Oh well, maybe next time I'll write about jdramas, something more interesting :P
